Where the cut is unforgettable

Sharp shears. Honest color. Hair that holds its shape between visits because it was cut right the first time. Editorial precision, delivered with the cool confidence of a stylist who isn't afraid to go shorter.

What we do

Four crafts,
one sharp team.

A salon built around the work, not the upsell. Each service is performed by a stylist who specializes in it — so the person holding the shears at your chair is the person you came to see.

Our approach

Less product
push. More
honest results.

Most salons trade in rituals — the upsell, the add-on, the chair-side pitch. We trade in the result that holds up six weeks later. If a service doesn't earn its line on your calendar, we won't recommend it.

  • One stylist per appointment start to finish
  • Custom color formulas mixed fresh each visit
  • Honest timing — never over-booked
  • Walk-out styling with at-home care notes
  • Photography of your final look saved to file
  • Quiet, music-controlled atmosphere

The studio

A small
chair count
on purpose.

Zen Salon is intentionally small. Fewer stations means a quieter room, more time with each guest, and a team that has chosen this craft as a career — not a stepping stone. We're based on Center Grove Drive in Dubuque, serving clients from across the tri-state area who want a cut worth driving for.

Our stylists train together, photograph each other's work, and consult on color formulas for every guest in the chair. The result is a salon where the standard doesn't depend on who happens to be working that day.

Common questions

Things guests
ask us first.

Everything we wish every new client knew before their first visit — pulled together from real conversations at the front desk.

How far in advance should I book?

For cuts, a week is usually fine — we keep some same-week openings. For color or balayage, two to three weeks gives us time to mix your formula and block the right amount of chair time. Saturdays go first.

Do I need to come with clean hair?

For cuts, yes — freshly washed hair is easiest to cut clean. For color, don't wash for 24-48 hours beforehand so your natural oils protect your scalp. We'll send a reminder with specific instructions when you book.

What if I don't know what I want?

That's the most common starting point. Every appointment begins with a five-minute consultation — bring a few phone screenshots of hair you like, and we'll translate them into a shape and color that works for your hair type, face shape, and how you actually wear it day-to-day.

Do you take walk-ins?

When we can. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments guarantee your chair. If you stop by without one, we'll tell you honestly whether we can fit you in that day.

What if I'm changing from another stylist?

Please bring a photo of your current shape if you have one, and tell us what you do and don't like about it. There's never any judgment — we just need to know what we're working with and where you want to go.

What is your cancellation policy?

24 hours notice, please. Color appointments canceled inside 24 hours may incur a fee because we mix your formula in advance. Life happens — just call us and we'll work it out.
